Mafia 2

It's a damn shame that the last third of this game played out like it did, because the first two thirds were absolutely magical for me. The world is teeming with life, and invites you to explore it without needing to resort to hiding weapons or upgrades anywhere. The second you step out of that cab at the start of the game into a snow-covered 1945 street, with Frank Sinatra christmas songs playing on the radio and people shuffling around under the moody street lamps, you know you're in for a treat. Atmosphere and immersion is central to the game, which makes it feel like the story takes place in a real living place rather than a cool digital sandbox.

You already know all about the linearity of the game, and how it's more of a linear game that takes place in an open world, rather than your typical side-mission-filled sandbox. Truth be told, the formula works fantastically for the 1940s section of the game, as well as the transition period between the 40s and 50s. The story stays interesting enough to push you forward as you get more and more involved with the mafia, and the missions vary and all serve a valid purpose rather than just being filler.

Unfortunately, the 1950s section of the game, despite featuring a couple of moments of pure brilliance, feels rushed. You meet gangsters and only do a single mission for them, you get thrust into a huge final confrontation way too fast without any real buildup, and the game ends on a painfully anticlimactic note. Actually, it doesn't even really end; it just stops.

Still, I guess you can't call it a bad thing that the game's only real shortfall is not giving us enough of it.

In a sentence:
Features many moments of sheer brilliance and what is probably the most realistic and living open world ever, backed by solid game mechanics and an engaging storyline. It just ends way too soon.

The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell Of Fear

Hmm, what a big dip this series has suffered since the first movie. It has gone from being a work of surprisingly cunning comedy genius to being a series of predictable jokes and corny slapstick humor. It is, of course, sprinkled with a few genius moments here and there, but not like in the first one where it was a near constant barrage. Instead, the good jokes get diluted by the bad ones, and the story is too over the top and childish to be particularly interesting. Plus, characters have now developed a weird tendency to act puzzled and open their eyes wide whenever something weird happens, instead of just ignoring it like in the first one. It worked better the old way.

This is still an entertaining film, but I can see how this ended up turning into stuff like Scary Movie and Superhero Movie later on. Inspiration doesn't last forever.

In a sentence:
Massively inferior to the first, replacing most of its smart-stupid humour with corny slapstick, and failing to keep your attention with its paper thin plot. A few brilliant jokes, though.

The Naked Gun: From The Files Of Police Squad!

While this isn't necessarily the comedic masterpiece that is "Airplane!" by the same director trio, it's vastly better than any of the parody films that you find these days (think "Scary Movie"). If you think Scary Movie 3 and 4 are the best ones, for instance, then that's because one of the three directors behind "The Naked Gun" was behind them.

However, this movie is from the early days of hilariously clever parody movies, back when it wasn't necessary to throw an insane amount of pop-culture references in the mix to keep the movie funny. Many of the jokes here are among the best in cinematic history, and stupendously genius in their stupidity. It's like taking the "Yahtzee!" joke from Scary Movie 3 and spreading it throughout a whole movie. Admittedly, this might defer to slapstick humor a few times too many, but that's part of the fun, really. The movie has aged surprisingly well, regardless.

Essential watching for anyone who has the ability to laugh.

In a sentence:
Flat-out genius moments amidst a completely silly and hilarious movie.

The Ghost Writer

This is actually my first Roman Polanski movie, and I can see I've been missing out. Every frame of this movie is lovingly shot, with great performances all around (Olivia Williams as Ruth should get a Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nom) and an extremely solid script.

What's most interesting is that the technical prowess at play here gets pushed aside by the pitch-perfect tension that is present throughout the movie. For once, a Thriller depends entirely on razor-sharp tension rather than explosions; Ewan MacGregor's character slowly unravels the conspiracy that surrounds him in a way that is both elegant and captivating, reaching a great climax when you least expect it.

My only complaint with the movie, and the reason this gets a four, is the very end. It's certainly a fitting ending, and I can see why they went that way, but I felt it lacked closure, or that it wasn't sufficiently emphasized. It's hard to explain without spoiling anything, but although the ending kept me thinking about the movie a long time afterwards, I'm not sure it was the best possible one they could've gone with.

Regardless, an intellectual treat.

In a sentence:
Technically precise, artfully exquisite and intellectually thrilling, but concludes in a way that might not fully satisfy some viewers.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Right, so giving full marks to what could be described as a flawed movie might seem a bit silly. Truth is, that's one of the things that make this movie so cool: it's so ridiculously over-the-top crazy and badass that it transcends pretty much all its flaws. The whole point of the movie is to melt your face off, and it succeeds brilliantly. Why penalize it for small details like lack of depth? :)

Action scenes (and in fact movies) have never been done like this. Period. It's pioneering in that respect, and a perfect blend of comic books and motion pictures, in a way that hasn't been explored by graphic novel affairs like Sin City and 300. I guess Zombieland came a bit close with its motion graphics integrated into the environment, but this goes a couple of steps further, fully integrating graphics, swoops, shapes, shaking, and a bevy of other elements into the frame. Add to that Wright's trademark frenetic (but brilliantly followable) editing and storytelling style, and this is one of the most bafflingly enjoyable films of the year, and probably the first proper "comic book movie", as opposed to "graphic novel movie" or "movie based on a comic book".

Watch it, pick your jaw off the floor, and watch it again. A future cult classic.

In a sentence:
Pioneering editing, motion graphics, framing and visual effects techniques take the action scenes to a new level. The rudimentary love plot even manages to appear positively blazing through Edgar Wright's lens.

Date Night

This is exactly what you'd expect: a formulaic film that recycles a bevy of overused elements into a somewhat coherent whole, thus squandering the potential of its talented leads. The movie isn't completely unfunny; there are a few jokes that got me to smile (mainly due to Carell's acting ), but they were few and far in between. The overarching "marriage becomes lame unless you go on crazy life-threatening adventures" theme is overplayed and stale, and not handled well anyway. This gets two stars thanks to Carell's usual awkward acting (and no thanks to Fey's bland and forgettable performance) as well as for the fact that the movie is at least watchable.

In a sentence:
Carell is decent, Fey melts into the background, the humor mostly falls flat and the story is void of originality. Less accustomed moviegoers will enjoy this, though.

Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Starcraft 2 is exactly that: a modernized version of the original. Gameplay is essentially identical, but everything that centers around that has changed: detailed stat pages, wonderful Battle.net friend systems, replays, new units, rebalanced races and of cours updated graphics. The beauty of the game lies in the incredible balance of the otherwise extremely varied races: every action has an equal and opposite reaction. It's just a question of picking the right actions and reactions, which makes this possibly the purest strategy-heavy PC game currently in existence.

Add to that the wonderfully varied single player campaign, built on a fun but campy story that takes you to a bevy of inter-spacial locations, and you've got a solid entry into the Starcraft series. People have critiqued the game for being split in three, but the truth is that each entry appears to be longer by itself than the full campaign of the original. Which means more Starcraft for us, which is never a bad thing!

This is a game that, as with the original, I'll be playing for years to come.

In a sentence:
Exactly what I hoped for in a Starcraft sequel, with a great single player campaign, fantastic multiplayer tools and gameplay that is as addicting as ever.

I Love You Phillip Morris

I initially started watching this without really knowing anything other than the fact that it had Jim Carrey in it, that it was a Con movie and that it had a rating above 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reason enough for me to want to watch it as soon as possible. I'm sure you can imagine my surprise, then, when Jim Carrey started kissing dudes. The actual reveal that Carrey's character is gay is pulled off quite excellently, however, and the handling of the subject is done quite elegantly throughout, but also fairly unashamedly. This isn't for homophobes, let me say that right now.

Other than the gay thing, though, the film follows Carrey's constant conning and deception throughout his life, which reminded me a bit of a more comedy-oriented Catch Me If You Can. Carrey's acting is excellent as usual, but Ewan MacGregor is clearly out of his element; he is constantly either overacting or underacting, and he is never believable, which hurts most of the romance scenes he is involved in.

All things considered, this is a very entertaining film based on a very interesting real con man, that is pretty daring in its treatment of the gay subject (which is a good thing). There isn't really any point to it all, though, and there's nothing much to take from it other than "being gay is fine!". Seeing as the events are mostly true, though, I guess that isn't the movie's fault.

In a sentence:
Great acting by Carrey, interesting situations and a daring take on homosexuality are somewhat dampened by Ewan MacGregor's poor acting and the fairly empty (if entertaining) storyline. Good fun regardless.

Eric's Reviews

  • About
I watch a ton of movies and TV Shows and play a ton of games, which is rather unproductive. So, I have decided to review as many things as I can, to at least get something that might be useful to others out of it. Sorry if I end up bashing a movie you like, as I'm in critic mode when I write here. In reality, I can enjoy every movie, even zero star ones! Hope you enjoy the site!
