12 Angry Men

I'm not usually one to go for old black and white films, but I absolutely loved this, enough to make me consider watching more older movies. The entire film takes place in one room, with the same 12 characters, with no real action other than talking or walking around. Somehow, though, it stays fascinating throughout thanks to its brilliant deconstruction of human interaction. Admittedly, it's predictable, but the intrigue here is more about how you get to the end than about what the end is (though some sort of twist could have been amazing). It also falls prey to some 1950s overacting and theatrics near the end for some characters, but the general theory behind their actions is nonetheless sound.

Basically, if there's a movie that will convert you to slow, old, dialogue-heavy oldies, this is probably it.

In a sentence:
A brilliant deconstruction of human interaction coupled with great cinematography and acting that nonetheless features a bit of 1950s cheese near the end.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

This is one of the more badass action flicks that have come out in the last year, thanks to some excellent acting and brilliant visual effects. Worthington doesn't play his role very differently at all from his stints in Avatar and Terminator, but he gets the job done; Neeson, Fiennes and Mikkelsen are awesome, however. Fiennes in particular is backed up by a ridiculously awesome dark smoke/fire effect every time he appears, which really helps with the badass factor.

The movie as a whole is one big action sequence that follows the events of the original movie and bases itself loosely off greek mythology. The setting and time period are enough to make it seem very original, however, and the film never loses steam or never feels overindulgent. Basically, it's an above-average action film with a smarter than usual story.

In a sentence:
An above-average action flick that benefits from great acting, fantastic VFX and a fascinating setting. It is nothing groundbreaking, however.

Bioshock 2

The problem with this game has always been that Bioshock didn't need a sequel; everything was tied up beautifully and we saw pretty much everything that we wanted to see in Rapture. So when this game was announced, I was immediately skeptical of how they'd make it different from the first. Answer: they didn't.

Okay, so you're a Big Daddy now but that only really means that you have a drill instead of a wrench and you can breathe underwater in some sequences. Saving Little Sisters now forces you to carry them around the map and fight hordes of enemies, but you can get all of the plasmids and slots from just harvesting them, so why bother? Also, you can dual wield plasmids and weapons, but it doesn't really change the dynamic much at all. Therefore, the obvious reason why they went the Big Daddy route was so that the story could center around your Delta status and the semantics behind the Big Daddy/Little Sister connection.

And story-wise, it does a pretty decent job, but fails pretty badly at explaining it correctly. You'll get some really cool Bioshock moments with insane people and the like, but how it fits into the main story is only ever really explained by hard to understand tape recorders lying around, or easy to miss sentences uttered by the characters. I had to go read Wikipedia after beating the game to understand what had just happened.

Still, generally the game is pretty fun and features some great environments, despite a loss of steam in the middle sections. Overall it's a game you'll forget about after finishing, but will enjoy while it lasts... Mainly for the Bioshock nostalgia.

In a sentence:
Almost exactly the same game as Bioshock, with some minor changes and a less interesting story, but also great environments and scripted events.

Eric's Reviews

  • About
I watch a ton of movies and TV Shows and play a ton of games, which is rather unproductive. So, I have decided to review as many things as I can, to at least get something that might be useful to others out of it. Sorry if I end up bashing a movie you like, as I'm in critic mode when I write here. In reality, I can enjoy every movie, even zero star ones! Hope you enjoy the site!
