Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

One of the most soulless movies I've seen in a while. It feels like all the characters just go through the motions, without ever getting me even slightly emotionally involved. Heck, even the action is dull, and goes on for too long without actually ever doing anything new. The humor that was great in the first one is overdone and lame in this one, and the story has a ridiculous amount of holes and silly moments. The film just has no focus, and even the otherwise impressive effects are misused and totally lacking the wow-factor.

When a summer action blockbuster actually bores you, you know something is wrong.

In a sentence:
A dull, overdone, heartless movie that isn't even really entertaining from a "I like seeing things blow up" perspective.

Evil Dead 2

HAH. That's more like it. I prefer to see this as a remake, since the first 7 minutes of this movie perfectly summed up the entire 80ish minute running length of The Evil Dead without really missing anything (except blood... oh no, wait). Also, because this movie is actually good.

Adding some humor into the mix was what made the difference. The scene with Ash sawing off his shotgun with his new chainsaw hand, and then making a weird face while saying "Groovy." was ridiculously awesome. There's just so many crazy things that happen in this movie that you can't really get bored, and it all gets exponentially improved by Bruce Campbell's hilarious acting.

Considering it came out in 1987, I agree that this can safely be labelled as one of the great classics of horror.

In a sentence:
Anyone that even slightly likes horror/comedy and blood will love this. It's a crazy, crazy movie. Great for watching with friends late at night.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

You shouldn't watch this is you haven't read the book... obviously. The story is not quite the same, some characters are introduced or modified, and parts of the story are cut out to fit the running time. It's a decent movie, but it just doesn't fulfill the incredible potential this series had.

Still, if you've read the books, this is pretty cool to watch as a complement. Seeing the characters and story acted out on screen is fun, and some of the new elements are intriguing. Plus, the effects are excellent, and Zooey Deschanel plays Trillian.

In a sentence:
Worth watching if you've read the books, as it's pretty cool to see it in a movie format.

The Evil Dead

Even after reading the Wikipedia page and all of the IMDB trivia for this movie, I still don't get why anyone would even come close to labeling this movie as a classic. I guess you need a certain mindset, where blood and gore can overshadow any flaw, which would make this the most flawless movie of all time, although I'm afraid that's a mindset I don't share. So, where to start?

The movie contains every horror movie cliché ever. Yeah, it's the early 80s, so there's a good chance that some of those clichés were actually invented in this movie, but that doesn't make it any better to watch today. The characters are mind-meltingly moronic; when Ash slowly walks up to a recently "killed" zombie for the twelfth time, and gets attacked by it just like the last eleven times, it gets annoying to watch. For some reason, it seems like a good idea to lock up a horribly ugly zombie that just tried to kill you into a cellar with flimsy chains and a small wooden hatch, instead of KILLING IT. It's also perfectly understandable to not be able to kill your zombie girlfriend twice in a row, after nearly being killed by her and watching her sing creepy songs with a zombie face for fifteen minutes. And of course, closing the door automatically makes the window that's right next to it impenetrable for zombies.

I guess if you're a huge fan of corny horror movies and blood, this can be entertaining. Thank god it's short, though.

In a sentence:
Terrible in every way, but considering the budget, the countless gory effects are well done.

The Hangover

This movie came out of nowhere and surprised the heck out of me. It's stunningly original, and captivating from start to finish. The humor, while supremely stupid, is great and well delivered, and the mystery of what happened the previous night is solved bit by bit in a very satisfying manner. The acting is great, the end delivers, and the pacing and general cinematography are top-notch.

One small problem I had was that I slightly disagreed with the message, as it was backed up by huge sophisms, which might lead one to assume a position that isn't... nuanced enough. Still, if you just look at the big picture, the moral is true.

In a sentence:
Very original, very well made, very funny, and VERY stupid. Dare I say, a future classic.

Up

I thought this was going to be a really strange film. In a sense, it was, but it still manages to be one of the best films Pixar has made to date (which is realling frickin' saying something). The characters are fleshed out and awesome, the humor is some of the best I've seen, the story is thought out, poignant and touching, and of course, the animation and 3d work is unmatched.

What really struck me, though, were the morals and themes of the story. I felt pretty imersed in the whole "adventure" vibe the movie had going, but felt one thing wasn't taken into account... until about 2/3 through, when this nuance was adressed beautifully. One of the best Pixar moments ever, in fact.

So yeah, it's in my top 3-4 Pixar films (they're all so amazing that it's hard to pick).

In a sentence:
Genius storytelling and themes, awesome characters and 3D, and some of the best humor I've seen in a while. Another classic from Pixar.

Note: I will probably update this post once I inevitably see it in its original English version. In the meantime, the Quebec translation was actually very very good.

  • About
I watch a ton of movies and TV Shows and play a ton of games, which is rather unproductive. So, I have decided to review as many things as I can, to at least get something that might be useful to others out of it. Sorry if I end up bashing a movie you like, as I'm in critic mode when I write here. In reality, I can enjoy every movie, even zero star ones! Hope you enjoy the site!
